Abstract

The title of this thesis, “The Literary Significance of Buenaventura Rodriguez in the History of the Sugbuanon Drama,” explains to a certain extent, the nature of the study, its subject matter and its socio-historical approach. Buenaventura Rodriguez, foremost playwright during the best years of the Sugbuanon drama, contributed around twenty plays. Five of these, entitled Inday, Bomba Nyor (“Attack, Sir!”), Mini (“Fake”), Salilang, and Dumagsa (“West Wind”), are here criticized. Inday, his first tragic play, is a centralized, sentimental story concerning the conflict of love and parental obedience in the central character, Inday. Bomba Nyor, a love story set with an overtone of satire on the pragmatic view of life, love and politics, has an accretive plot that converges on the problem of the central characters. Mini is a well-constructed play bearing a philosophy on happiness. Salilang, a symbolic play on freedom, is noted for its artistic treatment of a legend surrounding the epic battle of Mactan. Dumagsa, revealing a psychological sensitivity in the playwright, bears a social implication showing the influence of Western culture on the personal conflict in the story. The original versions of these plays, each consisting of not less than three acts, and their corresponding English translations are appended. Together with the rest of his plays in the Sugbuanon language, these five plays help to show the sincerity with which Rodriguez regarded the dramatic art.
