Severino Reyes was a Tagalog writer whose many-sided literary activities have not yet been thoroughly studied. He has been mentioned a few times in a cursory way as a novelist, although extant lists of Tagalog novels include at least seven titles of his works in this form of writing. To the present generation of juvenile and adult readers, he is more generally known for his popular tales under the collective title of “Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basiang.” It is in the field of Philippine drama, however, that Severino Reyes has been better known among the older generations of Philippine theatre goers, literary historians and critics. So outstanding were his contributions toward the development of the Philippine theatre during the first decades of the present century that at least one local critic considered him as “the most popular of Filipino dramatists.” Yet, in spite of his well-earned popularity, very few students of Tagalog literature have read, much less studied, his numerous plays, for, although most of them have never been published, quite a number of them are still extant in manuscripts or typewritten form and are more readily accessible than his printed novels and short stories. These preliminary considerations have determined the final selection of the subject for the present thesis. For purposes of logical treatment and presentation, the materials included in this thesis have been divided into two parts. Part I constitutes the analytical and critical study, subdivided into five sections, namely: (1) Introduction; (2) Historical background of Philippine drama; (3) Life and works of Severino Reyes; (4) Critical analysis of his zarzuela; and (5) Bibliography. Part II comprises the Appendices, consisting of texts and detailed notes which have been used to elucidate or illustrate the essential points in the historical and analytical parts of the thesis.
