Although the Protestant Church has existed among the Bontoc since early in the present century it is relatively small and marked by nominalism, syncretism, and lack of evangelistic concern. It is suggested that the first step towards correcting these problems is the contextualization of the Church among the Bontoc. This study presents an analysis and evaluation of the tengao ritual as practiced by the Bontoc of Mountain Province, Philippines in order to determine the suitability of its practice by the Church among the Bontoc as an initial step towards contextualization. Kraft's model of dynamic equivalence and Hiebert's model of critical contextualization provide the framework for the evaluation. This study recommends the acceptance of the tengao ritual by the Church with modifications in its current practice.
