Abstract

This study is the written documentation, discussion and analysis of the directorial process for Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas’ staging of Orosman at Zafira. From the researcher’s point of view, this paper discusses the: (1) traditional komedya conventions reinvented in the production; (2) the reinvention of existing conventions; (3) directorial concepts, styles, techniques, and processes engaged in the mounting of production; and (4) infusion of non-traditional komedya staging techniques that revitalized the komedya geared towards the contemporary audience. This study further discusses the creation and collaboration during the play’s pre-production, rehearsals, and performance. This study also includes an auto-critique of the directorial processes employed in the production. The study concluded that by: (1) establishing the intention of Francisco Baltazar; (2) analyzing existing traditional conventions and reinventing them by utilizing familiar images from indigenous Filipino culture; (3) infusing non-traditional komedya staging techniques to capture the short interest and attention span of the targeted audience; and (4) collaborating with artists, actors and technicians to thoroughly execute the directorial concept; the komedya will be effectively revitalized and greatly appreciated by the contemporary audience.
